Coast Guard Recruiting Requirements – Are You Qualified To Join the Coast Guard?

If you have an ambition of joining the coast guard, prior to making an application you must ensure you have the right qualifications. Coast guard recruiting officers will have specific criteria that an individual needs to meet before they are thought of as an eligible candidate.

Joining the coast guard is in some ways not unlike enrolling in other branches of the armed forces. At present the coastguard is run by the Department of Homeland Security and is the country’s smallest branch of the armed forces. The number of openings is few, in fact in 2009 only five and a half thousand recruits were taken on. As you may imagine, being accepted for a position in the US coastguard is not so easy, the competition is fierce.

To be eligible to join the coast guard you must be at the minimum seventeen years old, at this age it would be necessary to receive parental consent. There is a rule that dictates that applicants with no prior military service must be no older than twenty six, whereas those individuals that have been employed in another branch of the armed forces are eligible to join up until the age of twenty nine. A reservist would be allowed to be considered until they are thirty nine.

It is stipulated that those people who want to enlist in the US Coast Guard must have achieved at the minimum a high school diploma. Advanced schooling is not necessary though may occasionally be seen as favorable.

All applicants must successfully pass the ASVAB evaluation, otherwise known as the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery. This is a test designed specifically to evaluate potential recruits on their knowledge and understating of various topics such as electrical and mechanical engineering as well as writing. There is also a need for applicants to sit the Armed Forces Qualification Test that involves both math and arithmetic reasoning.

It is a prerequisite that all recruits must be citizens of the US or a resident alien. A background check would be carried out to ensure the individual has not been convicted of any crime. All applicants must have no more than two dependents prior to enlistment.

It must be noted that even if an individual fulfills the eligibility requirements, there is no guarantee that they would be accepted for the USCG. The recruitment officers would also analyse other considerations such as professionalism, honesty, English language ability, fitness, and certain special skills. It is essential that an applicant creates a good impression at the initial interview stage if they are to find employment in this federal branch of the US government.

With homeland security being a top priority of the country, the number of vacancies is expected to grow in the coming decade, but with serious concerns about the potential threats to the country through terrorism and the drugs trade, the procedures that govern coastguard recruitment will remain tight and rigid.
